Your New Favorite Book & Mug (a Giveaway!)
Friends, I have been looking forward to this post for a long time. You see, it’s about one of my favorite things in the whole world – reading! My husband and I are both huge fans of reading books. We’ve each got a stack of books on our nightstands – books on Christian living, books on training dogs, books on the Civil War, books on farming, books on the Vikings, books on psychology… 🙂 We can’t get enough!!
You can tell from that list that Bjorn and I do totally love nonfiction. But, aside from my occasional Amish fiction novel, and for whatever reason, it’s been harder for me in my adult years to continue discovering and loving fiction! :/

Bjorn and I discovered and fell deeply, madly in love with a fiction series that we will NEVER forget! You know how some books meld themselves into your everyday? How you find yourself musing about names or situations in the book, or creating inside jokes about the funniest quotes? That is what this book series has become to us, and since we talk about it with anyone we can, we just HAD to turn our attention to online friends and share it with y’all!!

This is Book One in a 4-book series called The Wingfeather Saga. Here’s how Andrew Peterson, the author, describes the series on his site:
What’s the Wingfeather Saga?
It’s a series of four fantasy-adventure novels about the three Igiby children, Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli. At the beginning of the story Janner is twelve, Kalmar (whose nickname is Tink) is eleven, and their little sister Leeli is nine. They’re accompanied by Leeli’s dog Nugget, their mother Nia, and their ex-pirate grandfather Podo Helmer.
They live in a world called Aerwiar, which is exactly like our world–except they don’t have electricity or gunpowder, and there are all sorts of creepy animals, like sea dragons and toothy cows. Janner, the eldest, is about to discover that the ordinary little town where they live is anything but ordinary. In fact, he and his family are at the center of a great mystery that will change their lives forever.

WE. LOVE. IT. Andrew Peterson is one of the most brilliant, interesting authors I’ve come across. Bjorn and I have only ever read these books out loud to each other (hello, long road trips and cuddly evenings! 🙂 ) which has been amazing. We’ve gone from laughing out loud at the most absurd situations, smirking at witty sarcasm, exclaiming at plot twists (ALL THE TIME), to getting quiet and somber at the most heart-wrenching scenes (okay, I have shed tears). It has been FOREVER since a book series has affected me in this way, and Bjorn and I know that reading these books together will be one of our favorite memories from our first couple years of marriage. (We’re nearing the end of the last book now, which is super sad. I don’t want to talk about it.)
Not sure if fantasy-adventure is your thing? We challenge you to pick up the book and give it a shot anyway. A couple good friends of ours recommended this first book to us, and when we borrowed it from them and got into it, we knew there was no going back. Haha yea, I believe that. Maybe if I suggested Harry Potter, he’d get excited about it. I suppose I don’t know if I have the patience for it, more than anything else. bahaha Either way, it sounds like a great read, and I can’t wait to get to read it!

I’m glad this post brought you a little inspiration then. 🙂 Yeah, this book series is technically geared towards kiddos, but it’s got such wit and depth of characters and plot..and a bit overarching battle of good and evil. Lots to think about.

I am doing a book club with a couple of friends, do you think this would be a good read?
Hi Amy! How fun that you are doing a book club!! I think my answer for you is “probably.” 🙂 These books (4 total) are technically designed for kids/teens, but I’m a firm believer that adults can totally relish child/teen lit too. 🙂 It depends on the “book-taste” of the people in your book club. There is great intellectual (and just plain ridiculous) wit in these books, though, making it really fun to read them as a 20-something.
The author is actually a Christian singer/songwriter and I LOVE how he gets some really heart wrenching and deep messages across!! So it’s important to note that while there is an overarching intense fight of good and evil throughout the books (and even battles and sad things like that),the author holds that he is including these things because the stories “are about beauty, resurrection, and redemption. But for those things to ring true in a child’s [reader’s] heart, the storyteller has to be honest…and acknowledge, the world can be a scary place.”

I didn’t grow up reading Harry Potter books (but I eventually read them in high school). To me, this Wingfeather Saga is even (gasp!) better! 🙂 Hope that helps some, Amy! Let me know if you have more specific questions after you read his explanation 🙂
This book sounds awesome and I just put a hold on the copy at my local library! Did you ever read Tamora Pierce novels? I love her stuff and she writes some amazing fantasy books. It’s mostly YA stuff, but lots of strong females in her books and writing that just sucks you in! Thanks for the recommendation!

My family recently discovered Andrew Peterson, and ohh, how we love his books and his music. We own three of his albums and have read all of his books. I was teary-eyed all the way through the last book, and a few hours after reading it, caught sight of the cover – that was enough to make me start wiping my eyes again.
I usually read books on the floor in my bedroom, or in the chair in the living room (the living room is best, because then I can drink tea or coffee without having to worry about small children running in and knocking my mug over. :P)

It’s so neat that you already know about Andrew Peterson and love his books. I totally agree – I was super teary-eyed through much of that last book! He is truly talented.

My favorite place to read is…anywhere I can! Lately, though, my most successful place to read is in the passenger seat while my husband and I do our errands. I will admit to finishing The Warden and the Wolf King on the floor by my bed with a flashlight, though! (and a box of tissue…)
I am not a “re-run” person: if I have seen a tv show or a movie, I won’t chose to watch again; if I have read a book, in general, I won’t re-read. But I have decided that this is a series we need to buy so I can have it to read as many times as I desire. I will also be using it as my go-to-gift when asked to birthday parties.
