What’s On My Nightstand: Current Reads

I don’t believe I’ve done a post sharing my current reads before, but I love similar posts and hearing what others are reading so I thought I’d give it a try! (That and I’m into some really great books right now and I wanted to share!) 🙂

Bjorn and I like to set aside time before bed each night to read for fun. We are both big into being lifelong learners and we LOVE to read, so it goes without saying that our nightstand stacks of books are pretty high! 🙂 Here’s a peek at what I’ve been enjoying lately (these aren’t affiliate links):

All Creatures Great & Small by James Herriot

This book is an all-time favorite of mine. James Herriot was a British veterinarian and wrote a series of books based on his experiences with animals and their owners. His stories (set in the 1930s-1950s) alternate between totally hilarious and deeply heartwarming. There are a lot of medical and earthy references in his books, as he describes his cases in detail, but the warmth with which he talks about animals and people always makes me want to read more. I am also a huge fan of the author’s imagery and descriptive language – you really do feel like you’ve stepped into the scene he’s describing! I love how each chapter is essentially a story of its own, which allows me to read just one chapter if I don’t have a lot of time.

I really enjoy any books by Beverly Lewis or Wanda Brunstetter. Reading about the Amish, even though it is fiction, brings me back to a simpler time and I really like to soak that in some days.

Feminine Appeal: 7 Virtues of a Godly Wife and Mother by Carolyn Mahaney

A dear friend recommended this book and loaned it to me…and I was instantly drawn to the author’s wisdom, practicality, and touching stories! I found myself wishing I had this book myself so I could underline like crazy all of the quotes that were standing out to me. So I ordered my own copy! I’ve been rereading the book more slowly this time and marking all of my favorite sections. Carolyn has wonderful advice on marriage and how we as wives can ultimately bring God glory by doing this married life thing well and with the right attitude. 🙂 It’s an easy, useful read.

The Shepherd Trilogy by Phillip Keller

This book is a new discovery and I am diving right in! I bought this trilogy specifically to get the first book that’s included, actually – it was just a really good deal. The first book in the series is called A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm. The idea of hearing a former shepherd analyze this psalm was intriguing – I love praying and reciting the 23rd Psalm and this book sounded like a great way to dig deeper. The author did indeed make a living from looking after sheep for a long time as a young man. Keller writes in moving, academic language, and while that makes it a bit of a slower read, it is chock-full of wisdom and I find I’m underlining his points left and right! I look forward to reading the next two books in his series!
