The Beauty of Planting Season.
A photo essay of spring planting in Minnesota, told from two different perspectives. π
First let me say that May is a verrry busy month around here. I bet you’ve seen enough of my field/landscape pictures to be able to guess why! Yep. This time of year, farming really picks up (as an understatement). Bjorn has been gone a lot more in the afternoons and evenings and weekends, working on farming tasks with his dad or with his grandpa. And this is outside of his full-time teaching and once-a-month army drill weekends! That man’s work ethic is incredible (insert all the heart eyes). Meanwhile, I am learning how to be an understanding wife who can drop what I’m doing to help with a ride out to a field, or prepare snacks for the men on their longest days, or simply have a very quiet day at homeβ¦ Growing up in a non-farming community, I have been pretty naive when it comes to all things farming. I mean, I did grow up close enough to a field of corn to know what it looked like (ha!) but 2 years ago, I didn’t know what the words “Allis-Chalmers” or “the bin site” or “auger” meant. And if I drove past a field cultivator or planter or combine or chisel plowβ¦I had no idea which it was. I remember fondly the first day I was driving past a field with Bjorn and was able to say, “Those are soybeans for sure!” Β π
So, last weekend was insane. Bjorn farmed after school until late in the evening on Thursday and on Friday, and was farming on Saturday from 5 am till 2 am that next night!!! Because when the weather allows and it’s time to plant – you plant and plant and plant and plant! I spent time over at my in-laws’ place on Saturday so I could help them plant our combined massive garden! I was close enough to the field to see Bjorn chugging back and forth in the tractor, but we were engrossed in our own version of spring planting! It was such a rewarding weekend of hard work (and sunburn and dirt)! More so for Bjorn and his father, but we were out in the garden for over 5 hours planning and planting everything, so my mother-in-law and sis-in-law and I felt pretty good about our progress too.
Here’s a peek at planting from the guys’ farming perspective:
And here’s a glimpse atΒ our day of planting the garden:
And now that planting’s done…
I’ll leave you with a very important question about this lifestyle:
What is the best definition of a farmer?
One who is out standing in his field. π
These photos make me want to get out and grow something…even though I don’t have a yard π
π My neighbor has a couple smaller “raised plant beds” on legs, so they’re about countertop-height! She keeps them outside but I almost wonder if some cute smaller version could work indoors? π Any kind of plants anywhere are fun and really brighten up a space. Thanks, Meghan!
Wow!! This is so cool! Also Hannah, how do you look SO amazing after all that planting?! haha!
Haha, oh thanks, Daisy! π I think the black-and-white effect hid a bit of the sweat and exhaustion during that water break!! π The planting was so fun, though – it kind of gave us a newfound energy, just being outdoors!
