My Sensitive Skin Care + Makeup Routine

|

Let me start by saying I am not a makeup artist. Whew! Glad that’s out of the way! 😉

But…after years of rotating through countless makeup products and struggling to find the balance between looking polished but also not 12 years old, I finally feel I’ve settled on a look I like! So the goal of today’s post is to give you a bit of insight into what works for me and consequently, what may work for you!

I’m lucky that I’ve never really struggled with acne in the sense of a true all-out battle with my skin, and I’m really grateful for that! However, I do have quite sensitive, fair skin. A lot of the trial-and-error in the past has been me trying to find a concealer that doesn’t look orangey and caked on, or finding ways to moisturize and wash my face that don’t leave it reeling and stinging from the encounter! (I remember one particular episode where I bought this new oxygen-fresh-something face wash – one wash and my skin felt like it was on fire!! Definitely not “fresh.”)

Since I’ve finally settled on a particular skin and makeup routine that works for me, I wanted to share it with you! Whether you have sensitive skin like me, or you’ve got fair skin and you’re wondering what concealer may work the best, my hope is that this post gives you a few ideas or options to try!

Starting With Healthy Skin

I use my St. Ives face scrub in the shower most mornings. I’ve tried other popular face scrubs and washes in the past but they left my face stinging and burning! This one leaves my face feeling refreshed and ready for the day, because it just polishes away little blemishes without attacking my sensitive skin!

When I step out of the shower, I start with my Rodan + Fields skin care regimen. Specifically, I use their Redefine Regimen because I love the way the regimen minimizes fine lines and helps with pores and firmness. It’s never to early to start with an anti-aging regimen for your skin! (This regimen includes my Daily Face Mask, Pore Minimizing Toner, and Triple Defense Moisturizer.)

I also want to talk about my Rodan + Fields Daily Face Mask. This face mask only takes 2 minutes and it is amazing! I felt the difference after my first time using it!

I follow up my Daily Face Mask each morning with my Rodan + Fields Pore Minimizing Toner, Triple Defense Moisturizer, and Multi-Function Eye Cream.

As far as body lotion goes, I’ve always loved Aveeno for my sensitive skin, and I use their extra-mellow Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream (most links are affiliate links) body lotion – sometimes found in the vitamins or creams aisle at the store.

My Makeup Routine: What Works For My Sensitive Skin

1 // The actual makeup routine begins with a simple primer – I like to use this e.l.f Studio mineral infused face primer. It just helps your makeup stay on a bit better throughout the day.

2 //  This L’Oreal True Match Lumi Makeup is my absolute favorite! It’s not too orangey either! What I like about this brand is that within the “Fair” spectrum, you can buy “warm” or “cool” tones. Plus, it doesn’t go on too thick!

3 // I finish with this powder. I totally love and trust Clinique makeup products. Their makeup has never made my skin break out!! (My shade is “Stay Buff” — Very Fair.)

4 // Next, I focus on eyeshadow. My sister-in-law and I came across the Nicobe makeup store when we were shopping in France this summer, and I immediately fell in love with the colors of this “Natural” palette! (On their site right now, here are the similar palettes, although they’re not the “Natural” color palette.)

5 // For eyeliner, I use Rimmel Glam Eyes Liquid Liner. As much as I’d love to try eyeliner on the bottom lash line…it does not work for me, so I always just do liner on the top.

6 // While the liquid eyeliner is drying, I fill in my brows a bit. I read once that your brows “should” be one shade darker than your hair color, which is why I get my Clinique Brow Pencil in Soft Brown. I used to always skip my brows, but in the past few years of filling them in a little, I’ve found it really helps me feel pulled together.

7 // I love mascara, and this Maybelline New York Volum Express The Falsies from Maybelline is fun! To be honest, I always like trying new kinds of mascara, so I may try a different one than this one in the future…but for now, I like it and it gets the job done! I do tend to stick to Maybelline for mascara, though.

8 // I brush on a little bit of blush from my Nicobe “Natural” palette.

9 // Next: highlighting where I can. I love how my Clinique eyebrow pencil has a highlighting stick on the other end – I like to use that for the inner corners of my eyes. I also really like this Benefit Erase Paste to dab under my eyes just in case I need something a little more opaque that day for dark circles – it’s pricey but I use such a tiny amount that I know it’ll last forever.

10 // The final step: my FAVORITE lip color ever! I love this one because it transitions so well from one season to the next. I use Clinique’s Chubby Stick Intense in Mightiest Maraschino!

That’s it! I know there are a lot of steps listed here, but overall it is a pretty quick routine. I am so happy to have finally found makeup that my sensitive skin likes, not to mention a skin care routine that acts as the perfect foundation for makeup!
