Our Family’s Favorite Spring Picture Books

| |

It’s spring! Well, technically it is spring. Here we are at the end of April in Minnesota and today’s high was something like 40 degrees – brr! But summer will be here before we know it, and with the next season just around the corner, I wanted to be sure to share our family’s favorite spring picture books before it’s officially summer!

This probably goes without saying, but we love to read in our family. You can usually catch me with a book in hand as I nurse our youngest, find Bjorn and me reading in bed before turning out the light, and in addition to the stacks of books we cover in our homeschool time, you’ll often see Bjorn reading kids’ chapter books aloud to Sophie and Soren when he gets home from work.

My husband and I are passionate not only about raising learners, but about raising readers. We are both former teachers (him, middle school; me, elementary). For many reasons, reading and enjoying good books is just part of who we are! A big love of mine is children’s literature. Selecting, reading, and recommending picture books is one of my favorite things to do.

Today I wanted to share with you the books that our family displays and enjoys during the spring season! Perhaps you’ll find a new title that catches your eye, or spot a favorite book that your family already owns and loves, too!

PS – Remember that children’s literature can be wonderful for grown-ups, too! Of course, some board books are definitely created for little ones…but don’t skip over all children’s literature just because you yourself are no longer a child! Some of the greatest gems are books that live in the children’s genre section of the library!

A Fruit is a Suitcase For Seeds // We really like this one! It’s a fun way to learn about seeds – plus it has great illustrations!

From Seed to Plant // I love books by Gail Gibbons. This is another great nonfiction one!

When Spring Comes // This is a cute little board book about spring – I think I put this in Sophie’s Easter basket years ago. We still enjoy it!

Little Blue Truck’s Springtime // We love Little Blue Truck books! This springtime one is darling. I love the pictures so much.

Miss Maple’s Seeds // This is such a sweet story about a woman who lovingly taken in orphaned seeds every year, nurtures them, teaches them how to grow, and eventually sends them off into the world! I always tear up!

The Fuzzy Duckling // This one is a simple but sweet Little Golden Book.

Home For a Bunny // This is another Little Golden Book – it’s a story about a bunny looking for his own home.

The Dandelion Seed // This book follows the big journey of a dandelion seed. The illustrations are detailed and so pretty!

Bunny’s First Spring // This was written by the author of the Jesus Storybook Bible. It’s so sweet to see the baby bunny puzzle over why everything seems to die in the winter, and rejoice in the return of spring!

Spring For Sophie // Another favorite! And not only because it has a little girl named Sophie in it. It’s the story of a girl who’s waiting for spring, and watching the world all around her (using all her senses) for signs of the new season. Beautiful illustrations, too!

Sing a Song of Seasons // Love this one! It’s a large treasury (basically a coffee table-type book) of lovely nature poems – and each one is labeled for a different day of the year. It goes through different seasons beautifully.

The Little Book of Backyard Bird Songs // This is such a fun book! I think it’s perfect for spring as we start to hear more birds these days! (Soren knows my favorite bird is the mourning dove so he’ll randomly bring the book over to me and press the mourning dove button. So sweet.)

Baby Animals // This book isn’t specifically about spring, but it’s full of nice illustrations and facts about baby animals all around the world! It’s educational and interesting but written in understandable language for younger children.

The Flower Alphabet // This book goes through the whole alphabet, highlighting one type of flower for every letter. It features really nice illustrations and interesting facts about each flower! (I also didn’t realize till now, but the author has other beautifully illustrated alphabet books, too!)

There you go! I hope this list was interesting and useful to you, whether you’re shopping for yourself or others! Hopefully you found a few new books to add to your collection!
