Bjorn’s had chickens before (they lived at his family’s farm place) and we’ve been looking forward to getting some since last fall! The plan is to keep them here at our place until they’re old enough to move into the chicken setup (in a grain bin) at Bjorn’s family’s farm. So, for the next few weeks, we’ve got the most precious little fluffy chickies hanging out at our place! πŸ™‚

For those of you who don’t know, you can order chickens through a hatchery magazine…and they will arrive in the mail! Well, the post office will call you when your baby chicks come in. How cool is that?

We ordered a “straight run” of 30 chicks from McMurray Hatchery. A straight run means that we didn’t have them sexed so we’ll just have to find out later how many males and how many females we have. πŸ™‚ I’m really excited about these, because Bjorn ordered my favorite kind – the Barred Rock! These are brown egg layers (they’re great layers), and they also are pretty stableΒ in colder weather. I’ve always loved the black and white striped look of Barred Rocks, so it’ll be fun to see them grow up, too! And we can’t wait to have farm-fresh eggs again!!!

  1. They’re precious and how fun! I have never been around many farm animals and I think it’d be a HOOT to have little baby chicks around. I have a question do they always constantly peep? As cute as it is at first I’m sure it gets annoying?!
Great choice of breed. I’ve seen them before online Etc but these are a beautiful type. ?
