Life Lately // 2

Happy Saturday, friends!! This weekend has been long-awaited! 😉 It’s just been a bit of a long week, so I’m really looking forward to a weekend! I’m sure you are, too. 🙂

Like I mentioned in my latest life updates post, I’m trying to do more frequent, casual updates on the blog. I totally LOVE writing other posts with tips or encouragement, but I don’t want to lose the journal-like aspect of blogging either.

It’s been a couple weeks since an update. Let’s jump right in!

1 // So, harvest season has begun. Bjorn and his father and grandfather (and more) have been hard at work. Bjorn and I have 125 acres of soybeans this year and they seem to have produced really well, which is exciting! Now it’s just that crazy crunch-time atmosphere of getting as much work done in as little time as possible, while keeping an eye on the weather and the calendar! I’m still quite new to farming in the grand scheme of things, having only been in this world of farming for a few years, but I am so proud of my hardworking husband! And I’m pretty darn fond of these precious soybeans! 🙂

2 // I am loving working with second graders this year! My small groups at the school have been in full swing now for a couple weeks. (I’m a Title I teacher so I support our district’s academic goals through small group instruction in reading and math.) I had a blast teaching kindergarteners last year so I was a bit worried I’d really miss them this year, having been assigned to 2nd grade. But 2nd graders rock. They are just so sweet (usually, haha), and I love how their age is a great mix of being inquisitive, naive, thoughtful, and hilarious. 😉 They are trying to figure out the world in their own way and it’s a blessing that I get to do life alongside so many of them this year as we work on phonics, reading, writing, and math skills.

Also, I’ve been trying to get to work earlier than the usual 7:30 AM and it has made a big difference this week! Even arriving at 7:15 allows me to feel more settled and ready to face the day.

3 // Have I mentioned my husband is running for mayor of our town? So there’s that, too. 🙂

4 // I recently made a huge batch of my mom’s delicious wild rice soup. It is amazing! And the batch lasted us quite a while, which was really wonderful during a busy week. Shoot me an e-mail if you’d like the recipe yourself! 🙂

5 // You know those Cirque du Soleil tickets I mentioned that I won on the radio? Well, we went to the show with our friends Brendon and Katie and it was AMAZING!! Bjorn and I really like the movie “Avatar,” so the set, scenes, music, and costumes were really fun to see! And we got such awesome seats – it really was a special, unique experience!

You can watch a neat video of show highlights here!

6 // I had this awesome little realization the other day that my last 9 photos in my Instagram feed FINALLY matched with what I wanted my feed to look like in my head!! 🙂 If you’re a blogger like me, or a shop owner or someone else using social media a lot, then you know the struggle to keep branding consistent and true-to-you. I’ve heard it emphasized that you check the last 9 photos on your feed to make sure they are consistent with what you want to share! That’s what people see first when they’re on your profile! I know my feed will continue to fluctuate, but I just had to celebrate. 🙂

7 // In other little news, I got a haircut/color last weekend and I’m so glad I did, because my longer hair had just had it (I’m one of those people who doesn’t really follow the rules regarding hair and I only cut/color it about twice a year..).

^^ My “Be Brave” sweatshirt is from Blair Lamb Design on Etsy! ^^

  1. That’s great news regarding your Instagram and your hair cut looks great! Also, that’s pretty awesome that your husband is running for mayor! I always wondered what that would be like since I feel like I would be so fearful to ever become a politician since sometimes politics can turn into mud-slinging. I’m hoping that won’t be his experience as he runs! Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

  2. These life update posts are so sweet! Thank you for sharing about this wonderful, rural life of yours in Minnesota 🙂

I’ve actually been meaning to comment for such a long time, I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and I immediately connected Minnesota and your husband’s name – I thought, “He must have Scandinavian roots!”. I was born and raised on a small island in the south of Sweden and lived there for 20 years before moving abroad to the UK where I still live with my husband. Björn is such a common name back home, so I was so surprised to see it on your blog haha! I then went on to read somewhere on your blog that Bjorn have Swedish and Norwegian roots, if I remember correctly? Is it possible that his ancestors were part of the large immigration wave from Scandinavia (but particularly Sweden) around 1850 to parts of the US, especially Minnesota? It’s said that they travelled across America until they found land that reminded them of home, hence why a lot of them settled in Minnesota. Seeing your pictures on the blog makes me think of and long for Sweden so much! If you and your husband are interested in this topic (I’m just guessing that may be the case because of your Europe trip (Signe is also such a common name back home, by the way!) and his love for history 🙂 ), there is a FANTASIC book series about the large immigration called “The Emigrants” by Vilhelm Moberg. I cannot recommend it enough. It follows a Swedish family from the hard times of farming, to making the decision to leave the land and go to America. You get to see what life was like on the boats going over the Atlantic and then how the family settles into life in the States. Just amazing. Here’s the link to the first book: https://www.amazon.com/Emigrants-Emigrant-Novels-Book/dp/0873513193/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1476537581&sr=1-1&keywords=vilhelm+moberg
There’s four books in total in the series.

This is SUCH a long comment, I’m sorry haha! I just had to write to you 🙂 Lots of love & God bless! / Maddie
