Happy New Year!!

I’m a sucker for fresh starts. I love making goals and to-do lists, I love looking ahead, and I love that spark of ambition that comes with a new dream.

Actually, to be honest, September always feels like more of a fresh start to me than January does, since I visualize every year in terms of school years (that’s what happens when you’re a teacher and you’re also married to one!). But on this sunny January 1st, I’m feeling extra hopeful and motivated. The past year was equal parts change and settling in, as I continued to lean into my role as Sophie’s mom. There were beautiful trips, lots of laughter and sunshine and sweet memories…and also those frustrating dizzy spells and forgetting to take good care of myself. Last November was rough, as I learned about what I’m dealing with, and I started the determined uphill climb from where I had let my anxiety pull me down. I’ve been feeling better and I’m on-my-knees grateful for that. And then we celebrated all December long with a flurry of social events and hosting (plus travel!). I wrapped up 2018 yesterday with a huge donation drop-off, organizing, errands, and even some time relaxing with loved ones. (And then ringing in the new year at 10 pm and heading to bed early!) It felt good to get things done but also to rest! I’m feeling more and more like myself again, and I’m really, truly looking forward to what 2019 will bring. The all-knowing, all-powerful God who made us also loves us dearly, and I’ve learned that He’ll be with us every step of the way. And EVERY day can be a fresh start – not just January 1st: ‘Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.’ (Lamentations 3:22-23)
