How to Conquer Your Kitchen in 15 Minutes (or less!)

|

I’m kind of one of those people whoย “fusses.” ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll explain. Perhaps you’re this way, too! If I’m watching a show on my laptop, I can never just sit in front of the screen. I’m constantly fussing with things around the house or in that particular room – sometimes carting the laptop from room to room as I straighten pillows, make beds, put dishes away…you get the idea! ๐Ÿ™‚ Luckily, this does lead to a tidier home, even if I may frustrate my husband by getting up during a movie. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think this tendency stems from the fact that I like things to be totally tidy. Before I feel I can sit down and work on editing photos or something, I like to have a clean room with little visual distraction or other little cluttery-tasks begging for my attention.

I feel most settled on evenings when I leave a clean, tidy kitchen downstairs. I just love glancing back at the freshly wiped countertops, the dish-less sink, and flipping the light off before heading upstairs for the night, knowing all is well and all is set for the next day. But – I don’t want to spend all evening after work standing in the kitchen!

Here’s how I conquer my kitchen in 15 minutes or less:

Put away all leftover food.ย This includes closing up any snack bags, refrigerating leftovers, and straightening any boxes of food out on the counters.

Wash the dishes and put away clean dishes.ย Someday, I’ll have a dishwasher to do much of the work for me :), but for now, I try to wash all dishes by hand right after each meal. It really beats trying to scrape hardened food out of a skillet the next day.

Wipe down counters.ย I like to use a wet paper towel but my favorite is a lemon-scented wipe! ๐Ÿ™‚

Scrub the sink.ย Even if you don’t sprinkle something like Comet and let it sit for very long, it’s still wise to sanitize the kitchen sink after every meal! I read once that the kitchen sink can have as many germs, if not more, than a toilet, which freaked me out! I’ve remembered that ever since so I make it a point to leave a CLEAN kitchen sink every night! ๐Ÿ™‚ That, and a clean sink is a great focal point of any kitchen.

Straighten chairs and wipe down floors.ย I think even the most careful chef, when chopping and dicing produce, can let a couple scraps hit the floor! At least we do. ๐Ÿ™‚ So I always check the floor to make sure it’s totally clean before deeming the room truly tidy!

Most of these tasks are habitual at this point…but even taking the time to type this out has served as a great reminder for me! Much of keeping a clean home is related to simple, small, daily habits.

How do you straighten up your kitchen each day? Is there a daily kitchen task you recommend doing?

  1. I am exactly the same way but in my family we called it “piddling” around the house! Whenever we have a show on I find myself doing random little things to tidy up. I do it a lot too now that I’m home with Caleb and those little daily habits help keep cleaning from becoming overwhelming!

    1. Yes! And I’ve heard of piddling too – haha! It’s fun how wordings can differ but habits can be so similar! I’m glad you feel you’ve got good little daily habits! That helps so much! (I just did all our dishes before sitting down at my computer upstairs! That way I don’t have to look at them when I’m more tired later, haha!)

  2. I used to be this way but Nate actually settled me down a bit and so I can find a good balance between “piddling” and resting. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. That’s wonderful, Susannah! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m still working on finding that good balance. But I really am appreciating building up those little daily habits so that things don’t become too much!
