A Kitchen in France // a review
I was so excited when this book arrived in the mail! I’ve actually known of the author, Mimi Thorisson, for several years. Her website, Manger, was one of the very first blogs I followed. I was really drawn in by her elegance, her ingenuity with recipes, and her stunning photographs – oh, the pictures! And hey, her Icelandic husband is a photographer, so every idyllic aspect of their kitchen endeavors is beautifully captured! You can head over to her blog most any day for new pictures and insight on their adventures.
This book by Mimi, A Kitchen in France, is one of the most beautiful hardcover books I’ve seen in a long time! It straddles the line between “coffee table book” and cookbook. Mimi uses fresh, beautiful produce; just looking at the recipes makes me want to eat more locally and healthy! As far as the recipes go, the instructions are laid out aesthetically on an entire glossy page, while the page facing it has a lovely photograph. I just LOVE food photography so it is incredibly inspiring to thumb through the book and soak up the rustic essence of each page! The photos are so beautiful, you just want to jump into them!! 🙂
What I love about this book is that it artfully divides up “a year at the farm” into the different seasons! There are sections about winter on their French farm, spring, summer, and autumn. What a brilliant way to split up the book, considering so much of life is ruled by the seasons when you are tied to the land!
All in all, I’d really recommend this book – if not for the hearty, beautiful meals, then for just the joy of amazing food photography. 🙂 My best friend and I decided we would just love to have an elegant French cooking day sometime in the future! Take a peek at this book – I bet you’ll end up feeling inspired, too! 🙂
Do you have a favorite ethnic or lifestyle cookbook? They are such a fun way to expand our culinary horizons. We’d love to hear your recommendations!
