A Fifty-Year Silence: a Book Review

Today I’m excited to change things up a little bit and chat about a book I read recently! I’ve always been an avid reader but in all honesty, lately I’ve really struggled to stick with a book and get through it in a timely fashion! I think it’s just the busy-ness of life in this season; when I get home from a day at work, there is just so much else I feel I need to be working on that reading for fun gets pushed to the back burner. Is anyone else like that? It’s rather sad. I love to read!

I received the book A Fifty-Year Silence from Blogging for Books. It took me until several chapters in to really start getting into the plot line and the characters, but overall, it really is an interesting read. The story is written about the author’s own grandparents, who, having survived World War II and many horrific situations, soon divorced and never talked again. The author was close especially with her grandmother, who lived near her in America, but built a relationship with her grandfather as well. He still lived in Europe.

The author, incredibly curious about her grandparents’ story, eventually journeyed to Europe to stay for an extended period of time to research details about their lives. This intense, difficult task is intertwined with the fact that she buys and works to restore a ruined home in France!

All in all, I did enjoy this book. I found myself looking forward to seeing in each chapter what the author may or may not uncover about her heritage or her grandparents’ story. It seemed to have a slow beginning, but it certainly widened my perspective and opened my eyes regarding World War II and other families’ stories!

Have you read this book? Do you ever read books about World War II? It is a really weighty and interesting topic!

  1. I read this book too! It was really sad to me, but like you I hadn’t read much in a while and it was so good to get lost in a book again.

    1. Yes – I agree, Katie! It was sad and maybe that’s why it was hard to get into it right away! 🙂 And it really is so fun to get into reading again!

  2. I haven’t read this yet, but am adding it to my TBR! I regularly read books set during WWII. There was a time when I wanted to be a historian and this was the time period that I wanted to focus on, so it’s one that I still gravitate towards when reading historical fiction or visiting museums.

    1. It’s so neat that you have such a fascination with history, Crystal! I think you’ll find this book quite interesting since you really enjoy that time period! 🙂
